Writer's Blues: Another Day
66Experiencing Writer's Block?
Writer’s Blues: Another Day
Another day slipped away
Carried on the long slanting shadows
Washes of blue on paleness
Waffs of disappearing light
Like the tails of smoke from dreary
Chimneys signing
wearing thin on the edge
Smoke and darkness embrace
As stars tumble out on canvas
Stretched out
Cold and unrelenting.
A long sign escapes
Another day
Staring at the blinking cursor
And nothing else.

For the writer, the scariest thing is a blank page. When you’re hunched over the keyboard or notepad and nothing comes to mind. Or, you’re writing but what you’re writing seems like a load of crap (well, at least to you) and you’ve used the delete button way too often and your mind begins to spiral down the path of “beating yourself up.” I’ve been there too often. Non-productive days like this past week. I know I can blame that on a bout of flu but on days, when the body is well but the mind is uncooperative, ……I can say it’s curse of the writer’s block.
Writer’s block or writer’s blue…been there?
I can safely say we’re all been there. While some writers will say that it doesn’t exist…just get to it, others will tell you the writer’s block is part and parcel of the writer’s life. It’s one of those humps and slumps we all have to ride. Well,, if you’re experiencing one of those down swings of your creative cycle, here are some help from established writers. Apparently, most of them have dealt with this problem before. And since it’s coming from the mouths of seasoned writers, we can all take heart and go a little easy on ourselves.
Recognize the problem and go from there
My block was due to two overlapping factors: laziness and lack of discipline ~ Mary Garden
If you want to write, write it. That’s the first rule ~ Robert Parker
People have writer’s block not because they can’t write, but because they despair of writing eloquently ~ Anna Quindlen
Just Get Started
If I waited for perfection, I would never write a word ~ Margaret Atwood
Don’t get it right, just get it written ~ James Thurber
The art of writing is the art of applying the seat of the pants to the seat of the chair ~ Mary Heaton Vorse
It’s a Grind but Hang in there
The secret of getting ahead is getting started. The secret of getting started is breaking your complex overwhelming tasks into small manageable tasks, and then starting on the first one ~ Mark Twain
I write 2,000 words a day when I write. It sometimes takes three hours, it sometimes takes five ~ Nicholas Sparks
All through my career I’ve written 1,000 words a day—even if I’ve got a hangover. You’ve got to discipline yourself if you’re professional. There’s no other way. ~ J. G. Ballard
There is so much about the process of writing that is mysterious to me, but this one thing I’ve found to be true: writing begets writing. ~ Dorianne Laux
Writers will Write No Matter
Writer’s block, you might even say, it’s a luxury that real writers can’t afford. ~ David Fyxell
It is impossible to discourage the real writers—they don’t give a damn what you say, they’re going to write. ~ Sinclair Lewis

" Writers write." Ernest Hemingway
You can easily gain inspiration by simply going outside. Have a 30 minute walk and be observant. You'll see tons of new ideas will come rushing in afterwards.
Regards,
Alma
Enjoyed the poem, lovely metaphors and the quotes!
I've come across this time and again. In my case, it's probably a signal for me to take a break and do something else for a while, recharge and so on. Beautiful poem and lovely quotes anglnwu, especially those of Anna Quindlen and Margaret Atwood.
A lovely poem anginwu and some great quotes, when I am struggling to find a subject to write about, I go for a walk and take photos, I then feel more relaxed and hopefully have some inspiration!
Thank you for sharing, voted up!
Some great quotations. "Writers write." Sometimes it may be a line, a poem, a song versus an article, essay or book. A block comes but what purpose does a writer choose to use it? As a stumbling block or a stepping stone - which will we choose? I am guilty of allowing the block to keep me from writing. No more. I am free to write. Right?
This was fascinating hub from you. You are my inspiration and thanks for always share your passion in writing. I can see your progress from day by day. Rated up and awesome!
***********Happy Chinese New Year************
"Wish that the Chinese New Year of the dragon brings peace, happiness and good fortune to your family"
Love and peace, Prasetio
Interesting read and one I can relate to. For me, I just leave it for a while. There is a season for everything. The desire to write again will come back at some point.
Wishing you a Happy Chinese New Year.
The Year of the Dragon. I don't know what that means but I hope it brings you good things. :)
Interesting insights into writing, anginwu. I'm always rolling a writing project or two around the back of my mind. Sometimes I never attempt to put an idea on paper, so to speak, but more often than not even those ideas lead me to something new to write about. Time to do it is the issue--getting serious about it would solve that problem, perhaps. :) Going easy on ourselves is as important as going easy on others! :)
Yep, yep, yep! I feel like that many times a week. Some mornings, it's so cold that I can't even think, let alone write! And the sad truth is I don't even live in a really cold place like Canada or Alaska! Wimpy me. Those famous writers' quotes are very encouraging, though. I really like the one by Margaret Atwood.
Loved the quotes writers! I can too easily get sidetracked when another topic or project pops into my thoughts. So these days I try to be a little more organised, and keep brief notes - not just a title, but also the various aspects that I wanted to write about. Seems to help a little with writers block, to remember what I was thinking in more detail.
Been there too. I get ideas from travelling, talking to people and read books... and I don't write till the ideas come to me naturally.
Loved the poem, you write so well !
I think we have all been there and have our own ways of dealing with it--one of the most useful pieces of advice I have ever received is related to one of your quotes above--just write even if it doesn't make any sense at all on the page--Great hub! And really a wonderful poem!
I can definitely relate and it's good you realize the blocks to your writing. Voting this Up and Interesting.
Thank you!
Enjoyed reading this! Love your poem, though you have writers block/blues you still managed to write a beautiful poem! Thanks for sharing.
