How to Make Your Own Fresh Floral Christmas Centerpiece II: Easy and Cheap

Some people bake during Christmas. Some find enjoyment in creating artsy stuff like cutting fancy snowflakes or painting the nativity scene. And for some…they find their expression in shopping for the ultimate gift for loved ones and friends. I would love to fall under the last category, since shopping is quite my thing but parting with hard-earned money is not….So, I resort to what I love best: making Christmas centerpieces as gifts. They are fresh and festive and they never fail to make a bold statement adoring the dining room or the kitchen island. So why not? With some ingenuity and penny-saving intuition, I can easily make a centerpiece for under $10, what you will find selling for $40 to $60 at the store. If you’re dying to learn more, here’s the second part to the whole Christmas centerpieces making secret. This Christmas, I wrecked my kitchen ( I know, the floor is littered with floral dissembled parts and the sink is an oasis disaster) but I couldn’t be happier with outcome. Let's start with some free stuff. Go to any place selling Christmas trees or your neighborhood Home Depot and help yourself to the discard pile. At this time of the year, you'll find piles of cut away Noble fir branches or Douglas fir. If you're polite, ask if you can have some. Honestly, the workers don't care if you take them--you're helping them get rid of "trash."

OK, I lied--I didn't just use the free stuff from Home Depot. To embellish it, I use a variety of Christmas foliage and some flowers. These I bought from a flowers wholesale market (at a fraction of the cost at regular stores). Still a steal.

The "free" word is very liberating and totally friendly to your budget. I got more free stuff from my friend. Her backyard is a jungle of succulents (her husband's obsession) and since, she has more than she can possibly handle, she's happy that her succulents get a yearly trimming. I get my loot and she's happy to tame her garden of wilderness. In fact, she's so sick of succulents, she requests that her centerpiece be made with anything except succulents.

Good thing, I love succulents and they're totally appropriate for the season.

Here, I made a table-top Christmas tree out of succulents. The absolute good thing is that succulents rarely die on you.
